How It Works
FireFoil Ember & Fire Shields™ work by protecting the structure from embers, radiant heat and convective heat. Complete deployment also greatly minimizes smoke damage.
When a wildfire is near, the shields are deployed to the exterior of the structure as seen below:
The shields trace their lineage directly to the fire shelters that are mandatory safety equipment for all wildland firefighters facing life-threatening fire entrapment.
The goals are to save the structure and minimize smoke damage.
The shields minimize smoke damage by fully covering the structure—including cracks, gaps, and other potential entry points where smoke would otherwise seep in.
The shields save the structure by protecting it from embers, radiant heat and convective heat.
What are embers, radiant heat and convective heat?
Embers or “firebrands" are small, glowing pieces of burning material that can travel more than 2 miles ahead of the main fire front, easily bypassing even well-maintained defensible space. According to the IBHS, embers are known to cause up to 90% of structure ignitions.
Radiant heat is what you feel when you are sitting in front of a fire in a fireplace. During wildfires, radiant heat can become intense enough to shatter windows, creating openings that allow embers to enter and ignite the interior of a structure.
Convective heat is what you feel when you sit beneath a heating or cooling vent. During wildfires, it preheats structures, drives flames into vulnerable areas, and carries embers.
How does FireFoil protect against ignition threats?
FireFoil protects structures by forming a continuous, non-combustible barrier that mitigates all three primary wildfire ignition pathways: embers, radiant heat, and convective heat. When embers contact the material, they are either deflected and extinguished on the ground or if they adhere to the surface they struggle to transfer sufficient heat through the shield to ignite the underlying structure. This is due to the shield’s low thermal conductivity and reflective surface.
The shields cover high-risk entry points, including eaves, soffits, vents, windows, and decks—areas most vulnerable to ember intrusion and heat penetration. FireFoil reflects over 95% of incident radiant energy and more than 90% of convective heat, dramatically lowering the surface temperature of the home and reducing the likelihood of structural ignition, even under direct wildfire exposure.
Our patent-pending shields far exceed the specifications set by the US Forest Service and require no maintenance, water, electricity, generators, or chemicals, and are reusable and easy to store. They protect for days, weeks or months, without degradation even as fires stall, restart or change directions. They protect the structure not only from fire damage but also from smoke damage.
The shields are each stored as a roll with a diameter of 6-10 inches and weigh 20-60 pounds while hoping to never be used, like an insurance policy. Yet when wildfire evacuation warnings are issued, it can be deployed quickly and allow the owner to evacuate with confidence.
Our Products
We sell shields and rolls.
- Shields: Large-format configurations measuring up to 20 feet wide by 100 feet long, ideal for rapid deployment of medium to large structures
- Rolls: Budget-friendly, measuring 5 feet wide by up to 300 feet long, ideal for smaller or more targeted applications
We offer multiple levels of protective materials, tailored to match the threat level of a wildfire and the importance or vulnerability of the structure being protected.
At the top of our product line is L140, our most robust and heat-resistant shield, engineered for maximum durability and protection in extreme wildfire conditions. For less intense scenarios, we offer options such as L30, which provides reliable defense at a more accessible price point while still meeting the performance standards required for effective protection.Pictured above: two large-format 20x100 shields next to a home.
